Exercise 12Read the text.

British food has a bad reputation in Europe; but traditional home cooked food is as good as European cooking.

A good example is the traditional British Sunday lunch which consists of roast-beef, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. British people eat a lot of meat. Mineral water is not very common. The most popular drink with meals is tea.

British breakfast consists of cornflakes with milk, toasts with marmalade, honey and tea. They eat a large meal at midday. At about 5 o'clock they have tea with bread and butter and cakes. In some families the midday meal is the chief one of the day. And in the evening they have a simple supper an omelet, or sausages, sometimes bacon and eggs.

School canteen

In British schools there are lessons in the morning and in the afternoon. Many children eat lunch at school. The food is very healthy there. There is salad and there are vegetables, there aren't any chips or crisps and there isn't any ice-cream or chocolate. Home children in Britain schools don't eat pork and some children don't eat any meat. These children choose a vegetable meal.

I Write sentences saying what you do when you sit down at a table. Use. sometimes, never.

The teacher asked some questions about table manners. The student answered them. Match the questions with the answers.

Some people judge others by their manners at the table.

They even think there is no better way to judge a person's Background than by watching him or her at the table.

The children learn it is impolite to talk while eating or to chew with the mouth open. As they grow older they learn the more obvious manners - not to butter an entire slice of bread, not to take more than one biscuit at a time.
